New Year, new exhibitions
Salisbury is a city brimming with creativity. Through the many unique galleries - from Salisbury Arts Centre to Fisherton Mill - Salisbury’s artistic originality is clear to see.
As we head into a new year, the city continues to showcase imaginative works through a number of new exhibitions.
Here are some to look out for this January:
Same Day, Different Boat
Same Day, Different Boat is a quilt that, through the textile artwork, diarises the journey through a pandemic.
The piece consists of hundreds of hand printed and stitched stories lovingly produced by individual artists from across the UK and abroad over the last couple of years, with each participant using the artwork to show their individual reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sue Brown, the project founder says: “The quilt is a metaphor for how the effects of the quarantine have isolated us, yet we have all been part of it. Making the piece open ended also illustrates that Covid-19 will continue to shape our lives - everyone has their own isolation story, and we will help tell it”.
You can see Same Day, Different Boat at the Salisbury Arts Centre from 11th January to 5th March.

The Affinity Exhibition
Fisherton Mill hosts this wonderfully vibrant and uplifting collection of artwork from two very talented artists: Heather and Annmarie.
The pair first met in 2018 on an abstract painting weekend and a love of painting has kept them together ever since.
Through The Affinity Exhibition, Annmarie will be showcasing a collection of work which explores the relationship between line and organic form, trying to find space on the surface for both to exist as opposites and the complement of each other.
Heather, meanwhile, is inspired by the natural world, the seasons, water and changing light, all providing rich influences on her work. She mindfully explores colour and light in each painting, conscious of how these elements lift the spirit and encourage connection with the subject.
The exhibition is open to visitors at Fisherton Mill from 8th January to 5th February. Timings: Mondays to Fridays, 10am until 5pm and Saturdays, 9.30am until 5.30pm.
There will also be ‘meet the artist’ days on Saturday 8th, 15th and 29th January.
Imagine: illustrating stories
If you love books like Fungus the Bogeyman, Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and Lola, then you’ll love the upcoming exhibition at The Vanner Gallery.
Imagine: illustrating stories, is a show of original illustrations by many of the world’s best-loved and internationally award-winning picture book illustrators. Published artwork alongside working sketches will be on display, featuring many famous characters created by artists including Raymond Briggs, Eric Carle, Lauren Child, Shirley Hughes and Oliver Jeffers.
The online preview opens today (7th January 2022) with the exhibition opening in the gallery from 14th January to 9th April.
Cutting It Fine: The Art of the British Wood Engraver
The exhibition at Salisbury Museum features over one hundred works by many of the most important and popular modern British wood engravers from 1920 to the present-day.
Works from Gwen Raverat, Paul Nash, Eric Ravilious, Gertrude Hermes and Howard Phipps are all included.
