    DAY 1:

The first thing you’ll see as you arrive is Salisbury Cathedral’s spire, the tallest in the country. Standing at a breath-taking 404ft / 123m, it has been guiding travellers to Salisbury city for over 800 years. Drop off is in St John’s Street, a short walk to Salisbury Cathedral.

Enjoy a fascinating glimpse into Salisbury Cathedral’s past on a ‘Beyond the Library Doors’ tour. Built in 1445, the Library contains nearly 200 manuscript books, some over 1,000 years old, and around 12,000 early printed books. Climb the winding stone staircase to the Library, situated above the Cloisters, where you will be shown a range of handwritten and printed books, specially selected to demonstrate the importance and variety of the collection. Before you head to your next place of interest, take some time to unwind at the Cathedral’s Refectory Restaurant.

Your next stop is The Salisbury Museum, currently undergoing a re-development as part of the NLHF Past Forward Project. Get up close and join an organised ‘Behind the Scenes Tour,’ where you will have access to parts of the museum not usually seen. Visit before the 16th of April 2023 and view the exhibition ‘Her Salisbury Story’, celebrating the lives of Salisbury’s women, including Lady Jo Benson, voted as the woman who has contributed most to life in the city. End your day with a visit to Salisbury Playhouse and enjoy a dazzling adaptation of the greatest love story of all time, Brief Encounter.

There are plenty of great places to stay in Salisbury, one to suit every budget. Choose one steeped in history with a stay at Best Western Red Lion Hotel, Europe’s oldest purpose-built hotel or the elegant Grade II listed Mercure White Hart Hotel. Perhaps consider a study break at Sarum College, just steps away from Salisbury Cathedral - ‘Read, Reflect’ is a guided group read of the novels inspired by Salisbury or ‘Explore the History of Spirituality in Britain’ examining the works of Julian of Norwich and John Donne.

    DAY 2:

Salisbury is a modern medieval city and offers visitors an experience like no other. Today includes a visit to The Wardrobe, a military museum where you can experience a ‘Living History’ event along with time to explore the Charter Market, dating back to 1227.

Today begins with a visit to The Wardrobe, the Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum, the only military museum in Salisbury. Visit during the weekend of 25th -26th March and enjoy a ‘Living History’ free event, ‘Women Through Time Weekend’ looking at the roles of women in wartime throughout history or on the 8th April experience a Second World War re-enactment, ‘West Country at War’. After all that excitement take a quiet moment of reflection in the garden and then refuel at The Rifleman’s Table, popular with visitors and the locals.

In Salisbury, we celebrate the unique and the quirky, the local and the original. Salisbury is a shopper’s paradise, unlike any other high street where you’ll be sure to find something unusual. Visit Salisbury on a Tuesday or Saturday and you can experience the Charter Market located in the Market Place, near the Guildhall. One of the oldest markets in Britain, Salisbury has hosted a weekly market since 1227. Today you will find a vibrant, friendly market packed with fresh, local artisan produce and unique products to take home.

It’s time to head back to St John’s Street to meet your coach and bring your tour to an end. On your way back pop into Salisbury’s award-winning friendly Information Centre to pick up a last-minute gift or souvenir or for further information to inspire your next visit.

Experience more of Salisbury’s originality and charm throughout the year, with a great range of festivals and events to delight you. Join us in November and December when our medieval streets, markets and shops burst with festive merriment and sparkling decorations.
